A little history:

Back in the 70’s, three United Airlines Captains (Bill Moore-ORD / Sylvanus "Scotty" Devine-SFO/ John Stefanki-SFO) were concerned that some retired UAL pilots were struggling financially due to minimal or no pension and unexpected difficulties beyond their control.  The idea of pilots helping pilots was born at UAL and they began efforts to raise funds to provide assistance.  It was a challenge in the early years.  Then in the 80’s, two Second Officers (Earl Jackson & Wray Bradley) were instrumental in successfully obtaining $5,000 in seed money from the UAL MEC to move the project forward.

The Foundation was successfully incorporated in February 1986 and has tax exempt status with the IRS under chapter 501c3 of the tax code.

Over the years, the financial base has grown through the donations and bequests of active and retired pilots and friends.

Home: What We Do

Structure:

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors that can number from 9 to 14 Directors. All directors are volunteers.  Both retired and active UAL pilots serve on the board.  Officers are elected from among the directors.  We currently (July 2021) have 10 Board Members, including one active pilot.

Eligibility

The Corporation shall from time to time provide monetary assistance to: (a) retired, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, United Airlines Pilots; (b) the widow/widower and/or surviving descendants and/or the spouses of surviving children of a deceased United pilot.  Any individual falling within the scope of this section may qualify to receive assistance after recipient clearly establishes to the Board of Directors that his/her total monthly income, after consideration of all relevant factors, is clearly inadequate to maintain a reasonable minimum standard of living.  The monetary assistance referred to herein may be provided for by grant or zero interest loan.
